Commas, dots, zeros. Read right.

A comma marks thousands in Tokyo and cents in Paris. Kahei reads each price the way it's written there, so a zero never slips past you.

Questions

Is Kahei free?

Scanning prices is free. There are no ads, ever, and you don't need an account.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Exchange rates are saved on your phone, and a new install already includes a recent rate table, so it converts with no SIM and no Wi-Fi. It always shows the date of the rates it is using.

Where do the rates come from?

The European Central Bank's daily reference rates. For currencies the ECB doesn't publish, such as the Vietnamese dong, Kahei uses other central banks' rates, collected by the open-source Frankfurter project. Daily rates are plenty for shop prices.

What if it picks the wrong currency?

Symbols like $ and ¥ belong to several currencies, so Kahei assumes your trip currency. Tap the currency pair at the top of the camera to change it.

Do my photos leave my phone?

No. Prices are read on your iPhone and nothing the camera sees is uploaded. The only thing Kahei downloads is the daily rate table.

Which phones does it run on?

iPhones with iOS 16 or later. There is no Android version yet.

Never misread a zero again.
